The List #0392: Go Drag Racing

05/30/2014   [Original: Autoblog]
Category: Motorsports, Sports/GTs, Videos, Dodge, The List, SRT

Jessi Combs drag racing

Hosts Jessi Combs and Patrick McIntyre head to Southern California's Irwindale Speedway to compete in a weekly "run what ya brung" NHRA Thursday Night Thunder event. With them they've brung brought some Mopar muscle: a Dodge Charger SRT and Dodge Challenger SRT8, both packing 470-horsepower 392 Hemi engines. But before our hosts can take to the strip, they first receive some tips and tricks from professional NHRA funny car driver Jack Beckman.

While many of our List items require a fair bit of time, planning and financial wherewithal, going drag racing is an experience you should be able to tackle yourself with minimal cost and effort.

Join us as Jessi and Patrick check drag racing off of their List.

The List Webby Award

It's a happy day here at Autoblog. Our very own original video series The List - 1,001 Car Things To Do Before You Die is the proud recipient of a 2014 Webby Award. Akin to the Oscars of the online world, The Webby Awards, now in their 18th year, have been hailed as the "internet's highest honor," by The New York Times.

Series co-creator and Autoblog Executive Editor Chris Paukert called the award "a testament to the hard work of our crew and the chemistry of our hosts, Jessi Combs and Patrick McIntyre."

"I continue to be amazed by the scope and scale of the episodes, which have taken viewers from the Arctic Circle to the Mojave Desert," added series co-Executive Producer and Autoblog Multimedia Director Adam Morath. "Credit to our fearless hosts, and to our talented director Graham Suorsa for identifying so many incredible opportunities to showcase Jessi and Patrick."

Autoblog would like to congratulate our fellow nominees in the "Adventure & Travel" online video category and thank our readers for your suggestions and support of the series. While The List fell short of the "People's Voice" honor, we'd also like to express our gratitude toward everyone who voted and applaud the University of North Carolina for their accomplishment.

If you haven't yet caught the series, scroll down to see what hosts Jessi Combs and Patrick McIntyre have been up to, or check out all of our individual past videos here. Thanks for watching!

The List #0117: Race in the King of the Hammers

Category: Videos, Jeep, Off-Road, Racing, The List

King of the Hammers

Our hosts head to the Mojave Desert in California to compete in one of the most varied and extreme off-road races on the planet, the inimitable King of the Hammers. Jessi Combs has entered the event four times, but has yet to finish. For her co-pilot, Patrick McIntyre, this will be his first experience in Hammer Town. Can they survive 117 miles of high-speed flats and rock-crawling traps in the Smittybilt Everyman Challenge? Better yet, can they be competitive and contend for a class win in their Jeep?

Watch as Jessi and Patrick attempt to check the King of the Hammers off of their list.

The List: The List: The Red BMW - A Retrospective

12/24/2013   [Original: Autoblog]
Category: Videos, BMW, The List

We can't help but use this time of year to look back at the days before and reminisce about friends who are no longer in our lives. For The List, Jessi and Patrick were often joined by a little, red BMW 3 Series that, at times, felt like a third host of the show. Having been bought used for just a thousand bucks, the red BMW proved to be surprisingly durable. Through jumps, dunks and monster trucks, it remained our little trooper 'till the very end, and on the way taught us all how important a faithful four-wheeled companion is to the life's work of completing one's automotive bucket list.

For our last episode of The List in 2013, we give you The Red BMW - A Retrospective.

The List: The List #0011: Drive the Tail of the Dragon

12/12/2013   [Original: Autoblog]
Category: Videos, Porsche, The List

After setting a world land speed record in a 50,000-horsepower jet car, we're bringing The List hosts Jessi Combs and Patrick McIntyre back down to Earth with a to-do item more accessible for the common enthusiast: drive the Tail of the Dragon.

If you're not yet in the know, the Tail of the Dragon is an 11-mile stretch of US Route 129 that straddles Tennessee and North Carolina. This windy, forested route runs in the shadow of the Great Smoky Mountains and is known for one thing: curves, and lots of them.

The bulk of its estimated 318 turns are located in The Volunteer State, and the good ones are given names like Crud Corner, Hog Pen Bend and The Whip. Many a motorist and motorcyclist have overestimated their driving abilities here and paid a tax in body panels and pride, and the police now have such a presence that tickets are a rite of passage.

Still, the Dragon comes up in any conversation about the very best driving roads in the US (dozens of you have written in and suggested we tackle it), so it's off to Tennessee we go to cross another major item off The List.

The List: The List #0393: Break a Land Speed Record

11/22/2013   [Original: Autoblog]
Category: Motorsports, Videos, The List

Jess Combs Womens Land Speed Record

Jess Combs Womens Land Speed RecordThe point of The List is to complete a bucket list that would make any auto enthusiast proud, but there are some experiences we always assumed might be out of reach for even us. Breaking a land speed record was one of them. The time, resources and skills required to properly set a new benchmark in speed are for the seriously committed only. Fortunately for us (and you), host Jessi Combs is one of those people.

As we reported, Combs became the Fastest Woman on Four Wheels last month when she broke the FIA Women's Land Speed Record on a dry lake bed in Oregon. Behind the stick of a retired, wingless ex-military jet, she recorded a two-way average speed of nearly 393 miles per hour and maxed out at over 440 mph.

Her feat was monumental and the experience once in a lifetime, making it perhaps the most worthy item we've ever recorded for The List. We're ready to share her experience with you, so scroll down to watch history being made.

The List: The List #0147: Escape a Car Underwater

05/22/2013   [Original: Autoblog]
Category: Safety, Videos, The List

Would you know what to do if your car crashed into the sea and began to sink? For every foot you descend towards Davey Jones' Locker, 850 pounds of pressure are being exerted on your car door, making the simple act of opening it and exiting an impossibility at the worst possible time.

For this episode of The List, we've brought our hosts, Jessi and Patrick, to the experts at Amphibious Medics to learn the various techniques for escaping a car underwater. That's right, there's more than one school of thought on the best course of action in these situations, and we're going to try them all. While our hosts express their preference for which technique worked best for them, we're no experts and encourage you to do your own research.

Of course, we set up a completely controlled situation wherein we could ensure the safety of Jessi and Patrick, so don't try this at home with your winter beater and a local pond. We found a location perfectly suited for dunking cars, hired some trained medics and divers to watch their backs, and enlisted the services of the show's trusty BMW 3 Series (see its other starring roles in Work as a Professional Stunt Driver and Buy a Used Car Online) to play the part of the hapless sinking auto.

Will this knowledge ever come in handy? About 400 people die from vehicle-related drownings in the United States each year, so the odds are ever in your favor on this one. But if you ever do find yourself slowly sinking underwater in your car, you'll be glad you scrolled down to watch.
